The Melamine Scare: Lessons to Learn

For years, my shopping trips have been restricted to just a few lanes in the supermarket.

These are the fresh vegetables sections, fresh fruits sections and whole/organic packaged foods sections.

I seldom wander into the packaged, processed foods or convenience foods section unless I need to grab some other household neccessities like paper towels.

The reason is simple - I find it increasingly difficult to trust food manufactures and food regulating authorities, thus reading labels have lost its purpose.

One of our readers wrote in to comment on the reliability of miso & seaweeds as a source of B12.

In my reply, I wrote that this article was not meant to be an ultimate solution, but rather aimed at creating more awareness and light amongst the confusing/conflicting sea of nutritional information.

B12 in miso and ferments became a debated issue since 1980s due to the strict sanitary standards of manufacturers. Tests conducted then found miso to be devoid of B12.

Most vegan diets are frowned upon because of the Vitamin B12 controversy. From all the angles of anti-veganism, this is probably the most common concern.

Vitamin B12, abundant in high quality animal products, is a nutrient which many medical doctors claim to be difficult for vegetarians to obtain.

What Is B12?
B12 is a nutrient produced only by micro-organisms, and is found in a variety of animal and certain plant sources. People with healthy intestines also produce large amounts of B12 in their colons.

Raw Food Diet - Eating with Logic (I)

There is a tonne of information and controversy regarding the raw food diet on the internet. We have the propagators, the persecutors, the passionate and the bewildered. Most of the chief persecutors zoom in from angles of nutritional deficiency, dissatisfaction with their food, body temperatures and laws of nature.

Before engaging in a never ending war, and I do not think it is wise or advisable to, let’s examine what raw foods are all about.
