My Raw Vegan Journey – Checking in on 2011 Chinese New Year Season (4 years Journey)

It’s the Chinese New Year again! In previous years, I’d go about preparing for New Year by queuing up for “Ba Gua” (super unhealthy roasted pork), “Ba Hu” (equally unhealthy roast pork floss) and the most famous Pineapple Tarts in town for that year. I’ve always loved to eat, and I’d even take leave just to queue for my favorite New Year snacks!

As I transformed from “Junk Food Queen” to “Raw Food Queen”, have I detached myself from the love of eating? Not at all; I still love to indulge my taste buds, and in fact, I take even greater delight in savoring the finest flavors from my palates now.

What I did is to simply to invent Raw Vegan Ba Hu – made with Raw Coconut Flakes and Coconut Butter!

Discounted Health?

While I continue to fantasize about my country having Green Smoothie Bars at MRT stations, major shopping malls and Raw Food Cafes in each neighborhood, I saw the first glimpse of my dream recently when a student of mine opened her first Smoothie Bar last month in China Square.

I felt thrilled because besides the fact that there is one additional healthy café to hang out with friends, this is also a significant milestone in my personal objective to create new employment opportunities for industries that contributes towards sharpening consciousness.

The owner of the Smoothie Bar is delighted to hear we’ve been doing free publicity for them, and was kind and thoughtful to offer a discounted package for students who quote our name. Although grateful for the gesture, my reflex response is this – there are high overheads involved in Smoothie business, I know making Smoothies day-in-day-out is not a bed of roses, and she deserves to make every cent she is making.

That very night, I had many realizations about how twisted our conventional societal views had become towards consumerism and health.

Let me begin by asking: When you walk into a fast food chain, café or restaurant. You order a burger, fried nuggets, French fries with a large soda drink – the meal costs about S$10-S$15. Do you ask for a discount?

Would you eat something which comes out of a laboratory?

My Typical Diet - Low activity Day

Do I only eat carrots and celery stems?
Are there only apples in my fridge?
Do I live on Green Smoothies alone?

While I believe that a healthy person can definitely live on Green Smoothies and fruit, and I’ve also known many athletic and active people who do, the answer is no - I don’t purely live ONLY on Green Smoothies in Singapore.
