My 9 Lessons of Christmas 2011

This Christmas Day, together with some friends, I visited the Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled; a place that houses children & adults who are mentally underdeveloped.

Amidst distributing soft toys & candies to these people, we put together an impromptu performance with a guitar and live singing. While I sang and my friends strummed the guitar, many of the Home residents came up and danced along. Some even started to sing along, albeit to their own musical tones.

After teaching more than 10 workshops over 25 days, Christmas Day was a precious rest day, and I almost wanted to sleep in and back out of the visit. But was I glad to have gone for it; because the lessons I got were priceless.

Gracing Grief

My father is the person I love the most in this world. The funny thing is that I spent a good majority of my life without knowing him because I left home at a young age.

My parents’ marriage did not work out since I was 3, and I did not agree with Mum’s way of loving her child though abuse, I left home to create my own life at 13. And so I never really knew how it was like to grow up with a father.

We lost contact through all the years while I was growing up, and I consider it a huge blessing when I finally managed to find him 2 years back. We completed all the unfinished dialogues between father and daughter, forgave each other and connected strongly.

Smile, Shrug & Say “Let’s Go!”

Just 10 min after we started the car, it began to rain. It was our earliest outdoor workshops together and we were transporting the yoga mats down to the event venue.

Jolyn and I was in the car, engrossed in our discussion about workshop logistics, when suddenly a car behind crashed right into us. Bang! Our heads were slammed against the car seats and I felt as if my heart flew out 1 metre ahead of me.

We got off and stared with disbelief at our boot – the cover flew open, and it could not close because the metal was all bent out of shape. After taking pictures and settling the insurance claims, Jolyn looked at me, smiled and said “Ok let’s go ahead.”

So there we were, 2 gals on the road with a heap of yoga mats and a car with a broken boot. What did we do? Steer the car to the side, we used one of the yoga mat strings to tie the boot cover down, enough to not block the rear mirror so that we can proceed to our event venue.

The Impermanence of Diseased Health States

“An illness of the body is always the outer expression and translation of a disorder, a disharmony in the inner being; unless this inner disorder is healed, the outer cure cannot be total and permanent.” Sri Aurobindo 1959

Like what all the spiritual gurus always say, the world is a manifestation of our inner being.

On the physical plane, what appears to be physical sickness & diseases are but the resulting effects of internal problems. The vast majority of people are still treating our illnesses with external measures, which is a pity because these can never truly solve the problem.
